Protecting the environment: Reporting close calls and incidents
At Network Rail, safeguarding the environment is our shared responsibility. Whether you’re a team member, contractor, or member of the public, spotting and reporting environmental risks helps us prevent harm and protect the places we all care about.
What is an environmental close call?
An environmental close call is something that could have caused harm to the environment but didn’t. This could include incorrect storage of materials on sites.
By reporting close calls, we learn from what almost happened and take steps to stop it from causing harm in the future.
What is an environmental incident?
An environmental incident is an unplanned event that has caused harm to the environment. This could include:
- Pollution (e.g. oil or chemical spills) and fly-tipping
- Damage to protected habitats or species
- Harm to heritage sites or listed buildings
- Nuisances like excessive noise, dust, or odour
Incidents may require an urgent response to minimise their impact.
What should you do?
If you see something, report it.
Quick reporting helps us act fast and prevent further harm.
If you spot something that may be having an impact on the environment, please let us know through the Network Rail helpline.
